Friday night, August 7, saw a large crowd of late war airplanes swarming over Western France. A squadron of P-47s played escort to a lone B-17 limping back to England, accompanied by two P-51Ds flying high cover. The Americans were jumped by a squadron of Me-109Gs and FW-390Ds. Things went badly for the Germans right from the start. The Focke Wulfs went for the bomber, but simply could not overcome its high resilience (although they did manage to damage it). My P-51D, piloted by my ace, began a night of ripping apart German planes (three damaged, one confirmed kill). The P-47 pilots took care of most of the remaining German fighters. Only a few limped back to Germany, most of whom were heavily damaged. The Americans lost one P-47 in return. To add insult to injury, none of the German pilots whose planes were shot down were able to bail out successfully, meaning a further drop in quality for Uncle Hermann’s Luftwaffe.

The FWs chase the B-17 and are in turn hit by the P-47s.
